What is it for and how does it work?
A rudimentary biological treatment device which consists of slowly passing wastewater leaving the pit over a bed of volcanic stones (pozzolana) covered with bacteria. The bacteria disintegrate the organic waste contained in the wastewater and the water comes out purified from the filter. The entrance is at the top and the exit at the bottom. The percolation height is at least 1 meter.
PERCOLATOR FILTER
IN WHAT CASE TO PLACE IT?
The percolator filter is placed at the pit outlet in the event that no other filtration system (sand filter, draining trenches, infiltration mound, septodiffuser, etc.) cannot be used for lack of space. Its volume is equal to half the volume of the pit, except in Nouméa where 2/3 thirds of the volume of the pit is required.
INTERVIEW
Once a year check the condition of the pozzolana. In case of clogging, the pozzolana will have to be cleaned or replaced.
